Hitachi's HIME Standard for Smart Tags to Be Approved by ISO
March 24, 2006
HIME (Huge Integer Math and Encryption), a public-key encryption algorithm developed by Hitachi for smart tags and other small devices, is reportedly set to be approved as an international standard by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in June 2006. Compared with the speed delivered by the RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) encryption algorithm, the low power consumption system can increase encryption speed by ten times and decryption speed by two to three times. In addition, HIME requires little computation, making it suitable for smart tags using microprocessors with low computing performance. HIME, which allows microprocessors to encrypt data within one millisecond, can be applied to existing devices with minimal changes needed.
